I was just wondering how to find out what the date is for 2020?. I've seen there is an event on two dates one the actual festival and one a week later for tourists?, also if I wanted to see the festival by the river with the floating flowers where in Chiang mai do you go?. I was also wondering if the festival at the temple with the monks costs?, but overall I'd really like to know the date for the none tourist festival date and if the event costs.

Hi Sophie N, WHAT research I have been able to do suggests that the main date for 2020 will be November 1st. If organisation is approached in the same way it was in 2019 then the main airport will be shut down on lantern launch night to avoid accidents with aircraft. Releasing a lantern before or after this night carries a heavy fine and/or imprisonment because of air safety. You also ask where to go to see the floating flowers. We found that the best place was standing on the Old City end of the Nawarat Bridge. Below us was a little bamboo platform on to which people went to hand their floating flowers to a man standing waist deep in the river. He then took it and gently pushed flowers out on to the river where the current drifted them away downstream towards the Iron Bridge. Please double check the date as it varies from year to year, 2019 being November 11 for the main lantern launch. Hope all this helps. Have fun.
