Democrats’ hopes for a powerful check on Donald Trump by controlling the US House are fading, with Republicans increasingly confident they will hold unified control in Washington ahead of next year’s big fights over tax cuts and spending.

Representative Thomas Kean Jr., a first-term Republican, was re-elected after a hard-fought race against Sue Altman, a Democrat.

Republicans will regain control of the Senate after capturing at least two Democratic-held seats on Tuesday, essentially giving the GOP majority control for the first time since losing it in the 2020 election cycle.

Republicans will control the Senate in 2025, as their candidates took seats in West Virginia and Ohio while holding off challenges in Texas, Florida.

Democrats have maintained control over the legislature for the last several election cycles; but this time around, Republicans are hoping to make some in-roads—especially after redistricting.

Republican Bernie Moreno is projected to win the Ohio race against incumbent Sherrod Brown, a victory that likely will give Republicans control in the Senate. As of 11:30 p.m. Eastern, Moreno led with 50.

The Republican Party flipped as many as four seats in the state Senate on Tuesday, while holding seats in the state House they picked up two years ago. The Republicans went into the election just one seat away from a supermajority in the Senate.

Democrats’ efforts to break the Republican veto-proof majority in the legislature appear to have yielded one additional seat.
