Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes was named the National League's Rookie of the Year Monday night, beating out a loaded field that included Jackson Merrill and Jackson Chourio after posting one of the best rookie campaigns for a pitcher in MLB history.

It’s the first time the rookie awards went to two pitchers since 2011. Red Sox right fielder Wilyer Abreu finished sixth among the seven AL players to receive a vote.

The Yankees’ right-hander edged Orioles’ outfielder Colton Cowser in the closest vote since 1980. The Pirates’ ace captured 23 of 30 first-place votes to win NL honors.

Paul Skenes took just 10 months to go from No. 1 overall pick to a major league horse, an ace whose dominance and staying power past the sixth inning seemed to hail from a bygone era. Monday night, the Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander’s dominance was rewarded with the National League Rookie of the Year award.
