President Xi Jinping announced that China will host the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in 2026, which would bring leaders from the 21-member group — including potentially US President-elect Donald Trump — to the world’s second-biggest economy.

Taiwan's representative at an Asia-Pacific summit met U.S. President Joe Biden on Friday and invited him to visit Taiwan in the near future, with the two men having a "lively" exchange of views, the island's delegation to the summit said.

At the APEC summit in Lima, Chinese President Xi Jinping cautioned against protectionism as he championed economic globalization. With Donald Trump's return to the US presidency, Xi's remarks signal China's intent to counter potential trade barriers.

After two days of meetings in Lima that rarely ventured beyond platitudes in discussing the strategies of the region's major economies, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum wrapped up Saturday with a spirit of detente that many fear the annual summit may not see again for four years.

China's President Xi Jinping told his U.S. counterpart Joe Biden that the issues of Taiwan, democracy, human rights and rights to development are "red lines" for China and not to be challenged, the official state media Xinhua said on Sunday.
