The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is warning Washington travelers to be more aware of what they’re packing after agents found a record number of guns in luggage in 2024.

The TSA at Newark Liberty International Airport stopped 21 firearms at airport security checkpoints, an increase over the 20 stopped the year prior. This number has been steadily increasing at Newark since 2019, when TSA agents intercepted 11 loaded guns.

Transportation Security Administration officers have stopped a record-high total of 16 firearms at the International Airport in 2024.

Despite the overall decrease, TSA officers intercepted a record-high number of guns at Newark Airport last year.

The TSA says passengers attempted to bring fewer firearms into DTW security checkpoints last year than in 2023.

More than 6,600 firearms were detected at airport security checkpoints by the Transportation Security Administration in 2024, and about 94% were loaded with ammunition.

Security agents stopped 78 firearms at Indianapolis International Airport checkpoints last year, down from a record high the previous year. The Transportation Security Administration released the numbers Friday.
