A so-called "bomb cyclone" is expected to bring powerful winds to Vancouver Island and the British Columbia coast this week, an Environment Canada meteorologist says. Brian Proctor explained these systems are caused by a rapid drop in atmospheric pressure at the centre of a storm.

Environment and Climate Change Canada says a "significant" storm is on the way to pummel the South Coast with high winds.

A special weather statement is in effect for much of B.C.'s coast as high winds are expected to hit the region Tuesday evening. The wind event, known as a "bomb cyclone," is expected to last into Wednesday morning.
