A supermassive black hole in a distant galaxy is once again surprising scientists. In 2018, a black hole called 1ES 1927+654, located about 270 million light-years away from Earth, showed its first signs of mysterious behavior.

Since 2018, we've seen 1ES 1927+654 generate jets in real time and found it may have a lone white dwarf orbiting near the point of no return.

According to the calculations, the likely object was a white dwarf about 10 percent the mass of the Sun. It was moving about one-third of the speed of light, completing a 100 million kilometers (61 million miles) orbit in just 18 minutes, in the early days.
