Baltimore officials have convened leaders from multiple utility companies to probe the cause of repeated fires beneath the city’s downtown streets, including one that badly damaged a city business and disrupted the power for thousands of residents Sunday.

An underground fire Sunday morning in downtown Baltimore left thousands without power, closed roads and businesses, damaged a bookstore and injured a firefighter. It was the third underground fire within a couple of blocks of North Charles Street this year.

Numerous roads in downtown Baltimore are closed and power to some businesses and residences is shut off due to an underground fire, according to a news release from the Baltimore Department of Emergency Services.
