In just a few months, we will mark five years since the murder of George Floyd. This anniversary, while an important moment of reflection, should also serve as a call to action. Come May, George Floyd Square — the area in and around the intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue S.

The Minneapolis Climate and Infrastructure Committee voted not to approve the concept layout plan for George Floyd Square that was recommended by public works. In the committee meeting, four voted in favor of a plan to “put the concept plan on ice” and two against it. This means the council will put off approving a design for George Floyd Square.

The Climate and Infrastructure Committee voted 4-2 to put the city’s plan “on ice.” Council member Katie Cashman said the plan could be reconsidered if the pedestrian design didn’t work out. But opponents say the decision will delay much-needed infrastructure upgrades.

The future of George Floyd Square remains uncertain nearly five years after Floyd’s death. Minneapolis City Council members voted not to move forward with the city’s recommended flexible-open plan. Some fear this delay could add another year or more to seeing tangible progress.
