Boeing is expected to lay off 10% of its workforce, which amounts to nearly 17,000 employees across the company, including over 200 workers in Charleston.

The cuts hit workers at facilities across the country, and appeared to impact all three Boeing divisions: commercial airplanes, defense and global services.

About 220 South Carolina Boeing workers will be out of work after the new year. The financially struggling aerospace company announced the layoffs, expected to begin Jan. 17. All but eight of the employees losing their jobs work in North Charleston,

Most of the layoffs are expected to start on Jan. 17, the company said in its WARN letter. The biggest number of layoffs come at Boeing's North Charleston facility on International Boulevard, where 211 workers are slated to lose their jobs.

The company submitted notice to the Washington Employment Security Department of how many positions they plan to eliminate in the Evergreen State.

As the holiday season arrives, and people begin wrapping presents in red, green, and gold paper, Boeing is sending pink slips to some of its employees, including 2,199 in Washington state.
