FSIS ensures food safety through the authorities of the Federal Meat Inspection Act, the Poultry Products Inspection Act, and the Egg Products Inspection Act; as well as humane animal handling through the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 5, 2025 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is issuing a public health alert due to concerns of frozen, raw ground beef products that may be contaminated with foreign material, specifically hard plastic and metal.

Consumers, communities, industry and government all work together to prevent foodborne illness. You can also help protect the broader public and your community by reporting any problems you encounter with food to the appropriate authorities.

FSIS inspects egg products sold in interstate commerce and reinspects imported products to ensure that they meet U.S. food safety standards.

Thousands of FSIS inspectors across the U.S. conduct daily inspection activities, verifying domestic industry compliance with applicable food safety regulatory requirements.

Aug 16, 2020 · Under the Federal Meat Inspection Act, FSIS is responsible for ensuring that the nation's commercial supply of meat, wholly or in part, from the carcass or parts of any cattle, sheep, swine, and goat, is safe, wholesome, and correctly labeled.

Jan 24, 2025 · Starting November 4, 2024, all export certificates for meat and poultry products (FSIS Form 9060-5 series), excluding casings and egg products, exported to Mexico will be generated through FSIS' Public Health Information System (PHIS) and will be digitally signed.
