Jan 22, 2025 · MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Federal officials have identified the remains of a U.S. Air Force pilot from Wisconsin who went missing during the Vietnam War nearly 60 years ago. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced Tuesday that its scientists in December positively identified the remains of U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Donald W. Downing of Columbus.

The United States entered the war incrementally between 1950 and 1965, when President Lyndon Johnson began bombing North Vietnam and sent U.S. Marines to defend South Vietnam. The war pitted the North Vietnamese and the National Liberation Front — NLF, or Vietcong — against the United States and the South Vietnamese.

The Highground, located four miles west of Neillsville, started as the Wisconsin Vietnam Veterans Memorial Project in 1984. It has grown to a 155-acre Park that includes a museum, a gift shop, pavilions, picnic areas and four miles of hiking trails.
